Output Devices, Computation, and the Future of Mathematical Crafts

چکیده
As I write this sentence, I am glancing over at the color printer sitting beside my screen. In the popular jargon of the computer industry, that printer is called a "peripheral"—which, upon reflection, is a rather odd way to describe it. What, precisely, is it peripheral to? If the ultimate goal of my activity is to produce a physical artifact, then one would have to conclude that the printer is a central—maybe the central—technological device in sight. Possibly, the designation of the printer as a peripheral device (and for that matter, the similar designation of the screen, keyboard, and scanner also on the desk) derives from a metaphor that has acted as a leitmotif in the literature of computer architecture since the days of EDVAC—namely, the metaphor of the central processing unit as a “brain,” equipped with an internal memory, and directing the actions of the various surrounding limbs and senses that interact with the physical world.

Mathematical String Sculptures: A Case Study in Computationally-Enhanced Mathematical Crafts
Mathematical string sculptures constitute an extremely beautiful realm of mathematical crafts. This snapshot begins with a description of a marvelous (and no longer manufactured) toy called Space Spider, which provided a framework with which children could experiment with string sculptures. Using a computer-controlled laser cutter to create frames for weaving string, not only can we recreate th...
متن کاملMathematical Crafts for Children: Beyond Scissors and Glue
Traditionally, craft activities have provided a tasteful introduction to mathematics for children: through the building of paper polyhedra, or the creation of patterns in string, children have often come to appreciate profound mathematical ideas. The next decade, however, is likely to see a tremendous expansion of accessible, powerful technology that will (or at least could) radically reshape a...
متن کاملComputation of Output Losses due to Congestion in Data Envelopment Analysis
Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is an approach for evaluating performances of Decision Making Units (DMUs). The performances of DMUs are affected by the amount of sources that DMUs used. Usually increases in inputs cause increases in outputs. However, there are situations where increases in one or more inputs generate a reduction in one or more outputs. In such situations there is congesti...
متن کاملبررسی متالورژیکی ابزارآلات جنگی ایران باستان- ایلام - میانه
This study mainly concentrates on metallurgical structure of the ferrous ancient crafts, specially the discovered ferrous man-made pieces in Ilam which are aged more than 3000 years. The pieces were discovered in Ize a town located in the south east of Ahvaz , in the southern of Iran. The crafts include an ferrous bar, a 3-side and a 4 side bayonets which were microscopically studied by Electro...
متن کاملLearning Curve Consideration in Makespan Computation Using Artificial Neural Network Approach
This paper presents an alternative method using artificial neural network (ANN) to develop a scheduling scheme which is used to determine the makespan or cycle time of a group of jobs going through a series of stages or workstations. The common conventional method uses mathematical programming techniques and presented in Gantt charts forms. The contribution of this paper is in three fold. First...
